We imagine that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the sort of short-attention-span twit who gets bored the moment she puts her phone down for more than five minutes, so it was with little surprise that we heard her tell a Queens town hall that she found the impeachment process against President Donald Trump “boring.”
“He should have been impeached a long time ago,” she said, failing to explain why. “I’m over it. And so that’s how I feel about it because we’ve got work to do.”
AOC, mental giant, said that impeachment was an unfortunate distractions from the goal of achieving “social and economic and racial justice in the United States of America.”
“The impeachment of this president is the short-term action we need to preserve our democracy,” she said, “but if we are really going to thrive as a country, we need to make long-term investments.”
Yadda yadda yadda, Green New Deal.
As easy (and fun) as it is to mock Ocasio-Cortez as the nitwit that she is, though, it’s also important to remember two things: She is wildly popular among young Democrat voters, which makes her a political threat in the future. And two, she is wildly dangerous – a repository for some of the most extreme ideas that we’ve ever seen in the political mainstream. The reason she’s bored by Trump’s impeachment is not because she has ADHD, jokes aside. It’s because she is so wrapped up in her radical vision for this country that she can’t even believe that we HAVE a Republican president, much less one like Trump.
Take her tweets on Monday as evidence of how far out there this woman is.
“Mass incarceration is our American reality. It is a system whose logic evolved from the same lineage as Jim Crow, American apartheid, & slavery,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote. “To end it, we have to change. That means we need to have a real conversation about decarceration & prison abolition in this country.
“Yesterday morning I spoke with a woman who was thrown in Rikers as a teenager. Put in solitary confinement for MONTHS, aka torture. Force-fed pills. The conditions were so bad, she too had drank out of toilets,” she added. “A cage is a cage is a cage. And humans don’t belong in them.”
Yes, you’re reading that right. Ocasio-Cortez wants to eliminate the entire concept of imprisonment. Take a guess at what this country would look like after a few years – after just ONE year – of that policy.
Well, one thing you can guarantee: You wouldn’t be bored.
