(PatriotNewsDaily.com) – Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and President Joe Biden risk political blowback from both sides relating to a six-bill spending package that lawmakers rushed to pass before Saturday’s government shutdown deadline.
The bill passed in the House on Friday and quickly drew fire from both sides of the political spectrum. It now awaits the decision of the Senate, which will need to act quickly in order to keep the wheels turning.
Senior White House officials were heavily involved in the negotiations with the House Speaker which has resulted in many Senate Democrats being frustrated about the change in the deal and direction. As part of the deal, there will now be more funding available for detention facilities at the U.S.-Mexico border. The deal also had several cuts in nongovernmental organizations’ federal funding, including funding for organizations that provide migrants with food and transportation.
These latest concessions regarding immigration drew the ire of many Democrats, and at least one Freedom Caucus member floated the idea of ousting Johnson due to concessions made from the conservative side. Removed from the bill were restrictions on abortion, DEI initiatives, and transgender healthcare. Johnson will need to make amends, as he could be removed with only a few defections. Several Democrats have said they would come to Johnson’s aid if a motion to vacate were brought forward.
Former Speaker McCarthy relayed to Johnson that he did not believe the House would go through with another motion to vacate.
