Bennie Thompson (D-MS), who chaired the House select committee on the January 6th attack on the Capitol, strongly criticized an event this past Friday termed an “election integrity” press conference by former President Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). The event was held at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. Trump took the stage to express his concerns about noncitizens voting in elections, an issue already addressed by federal law that prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections.
In a statement released through the Biden administration, Thompson dismissed the event as a “sham” and reiterated the legality of the current voting laws. He expressed concerns about Trump’s ongoing threat to democratic principles, stating, “The sham event at Trump’s country club should remind the American people of a dangerous truth: Donald Trump is a threat to our democracy and a danger to our Constitution.”
Thompson also referred to Trump’s recent controversial statements, including a pledge to pardon individuals convicted in the January 6th riots, whom he referred to as “hostages,” and his commendation of the attackers of Capitol police.
The event was also an opportunity for Speaker Johnson to showcase his strong ties with Trump and the House Republican leadership amidst key legislative discussions, including surveillance laws and foreign aid.
Moreover, Johnson’s announcement to release hours of Capitol riot footage aims to challenge the findings of the January 6th committee by allowing the public and media to review the events independently.
Thompson’s statement concludes with a stark warning about the motives of Trump and Johnson, asserting that their focus is not on safeguarding election integrity but on advancing Trump’s political ambitions and enacting revenge. He cautioned that American voters are aware of these tactics and predicted they would reject Trump’s misleading narratives in the upcoming November elections.
