The National Rifle Association is accustomed to being a punching bag for the liberal media in the days after a mass shooting in this country, but they have been under an especially withering level of attack this time around. In the week since the tragic shooting in Parkland, Florida, the media has gone absolutely bonkers in an all-out assault on the Second Amendment. And since it’s easier to build up a strawman like “The Evil Lobbyists” than to confront the reality of our Constitution, they have used the NRA as public enemy #1.
Unfortunately for the liberals and their agenda-underwriting media, the NRA is backed by thousands of freedom-supporting gun owners who know the truth: That any attempts to “gun control” our way out of this mess will only result in the punishment of law-abiding citizens. And fortunately for all of us, we have an NRA executive vice president like Wayne LaPierre, who isn’t about to back down from a political fight.
LaPierre came to CPAC on Thursday and he didn’t come with apologies.
“As usual, the opportunists wasted not one second to exploit tragedy for political gain,” LaPierre said on the first day of the conservative conference. “Their goal is to eliminate the Second Amendment and our firearms freedoms so they can eradicate all individual freedoms.”
“The elites don’t care not one whit about school children,” he continued. “If they truly cared, what they would do is protect them.”
LaPierre warned that while Washington might be under the control of Republicans for the time being, the Democrats could easily mount a comeback.
“If they seize power, if these so-called European socialists take over the House and the Senate and God forbid they get the White House again, our American freedoms could be lost and our country will be changed forever,” he said. “And the first to go will be the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.”
Here’s to that.
Of course, given enough pressure from the media and the gun-grabbing special interest groups, even the mightiest Republicans can waver. That’s what we’re seeing in Washington right now, where even President Trump is beginning to soften his stance on gun control. On Thursday, he proposed raising the age limit to buy a rifle to 21, directed his attorney general to bar the sale of “bump stocks,” and has expressed openness to other measures. None of these will necessarily mean the end of the world for gun rights, but we’re always nervous when the GOP gives an inch to these liberals. Not because we need to “win” every political battle, but because we know what their ultimate goals are. And they aren’t pretty.
