According to a press release from WarnerMedia this week, CNN host Brian Stelter will be teaming up with HBO to produce a new documentary about the phenomenon of fake news. Stelter, who works for a network that just got sued for millions for their defamatory (read: fake) coverage of Covington Catholic student Nick Sandmann, says that he has been working on the new movie for some time.
“HBO just announced something I’ve been working on for a couple of years: A documentary titled ‘AFTER TRUTH: DISINFORMATION AND THE COST OF FAKE NEWS.’ The film will premiere on TV and online this March. Directed by @a_rossi!” he tweeted on Wednesday.
In a separate tweet, he expounded on the nature of the forthcoming documentary: “’AFTER TRUTH’ is about ‘the impact that disinformation, conspiracy theories and false news stories have on the average citizen.’ As seen through the eyes of the purveyors, the targets, the victims, and the experts who track it all.”
The Twitter replies were, of course, merciless.
“CNN is the leader of Fake News!!”
“I hope you are the main villain in this fictional film!”
“I hope they cover how CNN covered the Covington situation”
“What could go wrong? #FakeNews doing a documentary on #FakeNews. Kinda reminds me of the FBI investigating the FBI. It means nothing.”
“I guess it takes a disinformation talk show host to produce a disinformation documentary. Something tells me that Russiagate, Spygate, Covington kids, Jussie Smollett, Prague, Michael Avenatti off the top of my head will NOT be included.”
Yeah, that’s a safe bet.
Well, projecting your own sins on your enemies is one of the quickest ways to deflect from those sins, so this doesn’t surprise us much. Stelter is one of Fox News’s main critics on CNN, which also plays into his modus operandi. As long as he can keep people distracted by “Pope Endorses Trump”-style fake news from Macedonia, he and his bosses at CNN can keep propagating a far more dangerous form of fake news to the American public. The kind that actually moves the needle. The kind that can actually destroy people’s lives, to say nothing of our country.
