( – On Monday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and former President Donald Trump met in Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence. This is the second time that the two men had met since Johnson was selected as the House Speaker last fall.

It is not yet clear what the purpose of the meeting was, but Johnson posted online that with Trump they would be working to grow the majority in the House and save the country. The meeting took place at a time when Congress was trying to find solutions for the U.S.-Mexico Congress. There are also those Republicans in Congress that have been pushing to pass a foreign aid bill that would support both Ukraine, in their fight against Russia, as well as Israel in its war with Hamas.

Still, GOP lawmakers have not been able to unite on a border/foreign aid bill that would be supported by both the conservatives of the party as well as the Democrats. Trump had previously been opposed to the Senate bipartisan bill that included both border security measures and foreign aid.

Johnson has been pushing the White House for a one-on-one meeting with President Joe Biden before he agreed to push forward any aid package for Israel and Ukraine. He argued that this was something that he would continue to insist upon as there were important issues that needed to be addressed and if the Hosue Speaker and President cannot meet then that is a problem. He added that he could not understand why they were uncomfortable with him meeting with the President but that he would go to a possible meeting in “good faith.”
