More specifically, 34 percent said that they viewed the speech very positively while 10 percent said they viewed it very negatively. In their poll release, CNN also added that it is much more likely for viewers to be people who already support the president. In fact, overall those who viewed the state of the Union address are 8 points more Democratic than the general public.

CNN noted in a release that presidential addresses tend to attract viewers who are more supportive of the president, and those who watched overall identified as 8 points more Democratic than the general public.

President Biden’s previous State of the Union addresses was also relatively well perceived, with his speech in 2021 being perceived positively by 78 percent of viewers, while his 2022 speech was perceived positively by 71 percent of viewers.

However, the percentage of people who viewed Biden’s latest speech as very positive was still lower than the percentage of people who thought the same about the speeches of his predecessors.

Of those who watched the address 71 percent said that the policies Biden proposed would help the country move in the right direction, while 29 percent it would move in the wrong direction. When first going into the State of the Union address the percentage of people who thought Biden’s policies were moving the country in the right direction was only 52 percent.
