( – Laken Riley’s father spoke about her death after she had been found on the University of Georgia campus, claiming that he felt that his daughter was being “used” by politicians who were trying to push for greater border security.

The 22-year-old nursing student had gone out for a run on the campus of the University of Georgia last month. According to the reports she had been beaten to death with the primary suspect being an illegal immigrant from Venezuela.

NBC reporter Priscilla Thompson had asked Jason Riley if he believed that there would have been a difference in his daughter’s case if there had been a different immigration policy in place. In response, he argued that he did not know whether it would have caused any difference, but that the man who had entered the country illegally might have potentially been out of the country if there was a different policy in place that would have more secure borders.

Many conservative politicians, including former President Donald Trump, have used Riley’s name and her death as a means of pushing for greater border security at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The House has passed a new bill that would require Immigration and Customs Enforcement to arrest all illegal immigrants that have committed “theft-related crimes” including shoplifting. In October of last year, Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, who is facing charges for Riley’s death had citations issued against him for shoplifting. The bill has not yet cleared the Senate.
