(PatriotNewsDaily.com) – On Tuesday, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) announced the establishment of a new statewide center that will focus on preventing gun violence.
The new office comes after Vice President Kamala Harris, who is leading the first White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, called for her office to start dealing with the situation on a state level.
During a press conference, Moore argued that gun violence was an important issue for them to confront, as 75 percent of all homicides in their state had been committed with a gun. He added that this was both a public safety and a public health crisis. He pointed out that it was crucial to remove these illegal guns from the streets.
Moore proceeded to talk about the Biden administration’s creation of the Gun Violence Prevention office last September and added that Harris has been calling for state leaders to take on a similar approach in dealing with the issue on a state level. He then pointed out that Maryland was choosing to take action to achieve this goal.
According to White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention deputy director Rob Wilcox, Maryland has become the first state to establish an office following the new direction.
Wilcox has applauded the decision and reiterated that this was a “public health crisis.” As he pointed out “Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children in America” which is not normal as President Biden had previously stated. He added that an ecosystem must be developed where the federal government can communicate with its partners on a state level to ensure that the funding dollars and government priorities are effectively used for their intended purpose.
