And we don’t use those sacred words lightly.
Maybe to make up for the absolutely ridiculous article they published about the social media watchdogs “White Nonsense Roundup” earlier in the week (see our article from yesterday), a news source no less opposed to the Trump administration than CNN actually published a positive article about the president on Friday.
We know. We couldn’t believe it, either.
And to be sure, there’s plenty of backhanded compliments and snark in the story, but if this was the way CNN typically covered this president, they would become one of our most trusted mainstream news outlets. This is the way an unbiased mainstream media SHOULD be covering the president – a mixture of positives and negatives. A mixture of views and opinions. They should be calling it straight down the middle, and they come closer to hitting that mark in this story than we’ve seen them get in a very long time.
It’s not like this was some glowing review of the Trump presidency. This was a simple recognition of a fact that almost no mainstream news outlet has had the courage to acknowledge: For all the lies he supposedly tells, Donald J. Trump the president has actually made good on a number of his campaign promises.
“A politician who actually does what he told voters he would do seems almost unfathomable in Washington, a town of broken promises,” CNN writes. “For Donald Trump, being a president who delivers is especially crucial, since it’s one of the golden keys to his so far unbreakable bond with supporters.
“The need to live up to that image helps explain why Trump, who is under ever-increasing pressure from the Russia investigation, on Wednesday recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital despite the widely acknowledged risks,” they continue. “It was just the latest instance of the President obstinately honoring the bumper-sticker vows he made to his ultra-loyal supporters — even those that horrify the political and foreign policy establishment, media critics and allied leaders.”
So you can see that they go to oddly extraordinary lengths to present an undeniable good thing (keeping one’s promises to one’s voters) as a bad or, at best, very peculiar thing in the case of Donald Trump. Which is annoying, but then again, we’re talking about CNN. The very fact that they are admitting that Trump is a man determined – obstinately or not – to live up to his campaign promises is an astounding step forward when it comes to their coverage of this administration. We don’t expect them to keep it up, but damn, we would be impressed if they did.
