Shortly after President Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Yale Law School published a press release taking understandable pride in one of their graduates having made it to the top of his profession.
The press release quoted extensively from Kavanaugh’s friends, professors, and colleagues, all of whom had nothing but glowing words for the man slated to take Anthony Kennedy’s spot on the nation’s highest bench.
“I have known Brett Kavanaugh for many years,” said Dean Heather K. Gerken. “I can personally attest that, in addition to his government and judicial service, Judge Kavanaugh has been a longtime friend to many of us in the Yale Law School community. Ever since I joined the faculty, I have admired him for serving as a teacher and mentor to our students and for hiring a diverse set of clerks, in all respects, during his time on the court.”
The release also quoted Professor Kate Stith, who said of Kavanaugh: “He is a terrific judge. In my federal criminal law class, I love teaching his opinions because they are smart, thoughtful, and clear.”
Well, Yale should have known that you can’t simply go out there and PRAISE a conservative judge, especially one who has been nominated by the evil Donald J. Trump! What were they thinking?
That’s what a collection of Yale students and graduates wanted to know when they penned a hysterical rebuke of the law school. The leftists scolded Yale for their endorsement of Kavanaugh in a letter so fraught with Democrat propaganda that one might wonder if these people haven’t been more influenced by MSNBC than anything they learned in the Ivy League.
“The press release’s focus on the nominee’s professionalism, pedigree, and service to Yale Law School obscures the true stakes of his nomination and raises a disturbing question: Is there nothing more important to Yale Law School than its proximity to power and prestige?” the letter reads. “Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination presents an emergency — for democratic life, for our safety and freedom, for the future of our country. His nomination is not an interesting intellectual exercise to be debated amongst classmates and scholars in seminar. Support for Judge Kavanaugh is not apolitical. It is a political choice about the meaning of the constitution and our vision of democracy, a choice with real consequences for real people. Without a doubt, Judge Kavanaugh is a threat to the most vulnerable. He is a threat to many of us, despite the privilege bestowed by our education, simply because of who we are.”
Thank goodness for the Democrats, including these current and former Yale students, for letting the world know that this Supreme Court nominee represents a threat to our very SAFETY! To DEMOCRACY! To our FREEDOM! We really wouldn’t have known, otherwise.
Of course, if you read further, you realize quickly that these leftists have a very strange understanding of these concepts. To them, the possibility that abortion-on-demand might be going away is an example of the THREAT Kavanaugh presents to our constitutional republic. To them, his position on the government forcing religious groups to provide abortion/contraceptive coverage to their employees is a threat to FREEDOM.
And then, hilariously, after counting all the ways in which Kavanaugh is an enemy of all-powerful, over-regulatory government, they conclude that “his appointment would usher in a new era of Lochner, with ‘black-robed rulers overriding citizens’ choices.’”
We’ve never read a more ironic, hypocritical, clueless statement in our lives. Among the Supreme Court decisions that might, if we’re lucky, be headed for the ash heap of history, none have so wantonly disregarded “citizens’ choices” than Roe v. Wade and Obergefell v. Hodges. Two decisions, we have no doubt at all, the writers of this letter fiercely believe in.
But they are right about one thing: Yale Law School should be ashamed. They should be ashamed of having handed out degrees to the writers of this letter. That these people are teaching, practicing, or learning law that shapes American society…well, that’s the very threat to freedom they think is represented by Brett Kavanaugh.
