HUD Secretary Ben Carson is no stranger to Baltimore. As a pediatric neurosurgeon, he spent years in the Maryland city working for Johns Hopkins Hospital. So if any black politician wanted to whine about President Trump’s characterization of the city, Carson should have been first in line. But instead of disavowing the president’s comments and insisting that Trump is a racist for pointing out the blight that has besieged the city, Carson is doing something that Elijah Cummings hasn’t bothered to do for 28 years in Congress: Actually come up with some solutions.
Appearing on Fox News Channel’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” Carson said Monday that it was essential to change the culture in Baltimore if we want to change the economic outcomes.
“You need to address the family issues. You know, there was a poverty study by the Brookings Institute, and it concluded after a massive study that there were three things a person could do to reduce the likelihood of poverty to 2 percent or less,” Carson said. “Number one, finish high school. Number two, get married. Number three, wait until you’re married to have children. But a lot of our policies over these decades have not reflected that, and in fact, have moved us in the opposite direction. We should actually utilize the data. It would make a huge difference.”
Utilize the data? What fun is that, when we can just stomp our feet and whine when the WHITE SUPREMACIST PRESIDENT points out some obvious facts about the state of a once-great American city? Why not just campaign, over and over again, on empty promises to stand up for black Americans who are sick of living in squalor? And then spend the next two years consumed with a fiery passion to impeach the duly-elected president? Utilize the data? Address family issues? What a nerd!
“I think what President Trump was trying to say is that rather than spending your time talking about, you know, our brave border agents and investigating endlessly things that you can’t find anything on, why not spend some time working more for these people, you know, who are suffering? And that he is willing to work with them. I think that’s what we should be asking for,” said Carson.
Precisely. Cummings may be a fine, upstanding guy or whatever, but it’s ludicrous-bordering-on-embarrassing for him to be slamming the Trump administration for border policies when his own district is in such an abominable mess. Has he no shame? Has he even walked the streets of West Baltimore? Take care of your backyard before you worry about what’s going on in El Paso, Mr. Cummings.
