“After 9/11, the greatest threat to our democracy lived in a cave,” narrates a Virginia Democrat in a new campaign ad. “Today, he lives in the White House. No one, even the president, is above the law.”
The ad comes from Virginia House candidate Dan Helmer, and he’s not apologizing for comparing the President of the United States to the Al Qaeda mastermind responsible for the worst terrorist attack in our nation’s history. Helmer appeared on Fox & Friends this week to insist that while Trump was not the “moral equivalent” to Bin Laden, his threat to the Constitution was roughly comparable to Bin Laden’s threat to American lives.
“I’m saying the oath we took to defend the constitution I take seriously, this president doesn’t,” Helmer said Sunday. “I did not say they were the same, I said he is a threat to our democracy.”
Just imagine – just IMAGINE – the outrage we would have seen on the left had any Republican in the country had the temerity to make an ad like this about ANY Democrat, much less the anointed one, Barack Hussein Obama. And trust us, if you were going to compare any American president to a Muslim terrorist leader, it would be Obama long before it would be Trump.
But that’s the way things go in today’s unhinged liberal atmosphere, where Democrats are still trying to convince voters that Donald J. Trump represents some astounding, unprecedented threat to the American way of life. You can almost feel their disappointment with how…well, normal his presidency has been. That’s not to say that Trump’s presidency has been actually normal or humdrum or that it has failed to live up to the extraordinary outsider standards he set for himself during the campaign. It’s simply to say that, well, he hasn’t exactly rounded up all Muslims into concentration camps. And if you were listening to the most rabid voices on the left in 2016, that has to come as a bit of a surprise. It turns out that Trump isn’t the Great Evil he was promised to be.
But you know, Democrats are slow on the uptake. So you still have people like Helmer out there warning us that Trump is some kind of unique threat to the very fabric of our nation. Why? Because he doesn’t hesitate to speak out against the witch hunt Russia investigation? Because he says mean stuff on Twitter sometimes? It’s not clear what offenses Trump has committed that would put him anywhere near the same category as Bin Laden, but when you’re preaching to the choir, we guess you don’t have to really spell it out. The insinuation is more than enough.
