Twitter is Mad That Hallmark Didn’t Announce Any Gay Christmas Movies

After a big hullabaloo earlier this year over a wedding commercial that featured a lesbian couple, Hallmark Channel felt it necessary to make some promises to the LGBT community. See, it isn’t okay anymore to just make movies for and about straight people. It’s discriminatory and bigoted or something. So, in order to smooth things over, the network vowed to sprinkle some diversity into their popular Christmas movies and improve the amount of gay programming on the channel.

But this week, after unveiling some of the new movies that they’ll be debuting this Christmas season, Hallmark Channel was once again on the defensive as Twitter’s legion of keyboard activists noticed the complete lack of LGBT-themed films.

Responding to the manufactured backlash, Hallmark Channel publicity director George Zaralidis released this statement: “Yesterday we were excited to announce 18 of our 40 holiday movies. Diversity and inclusion is a top priority for us and we look forward to making some exciting programming announcements in the coming months, including announcements about projects featuring LGBTQ storylines, characters, and actors. We are committed to creating a Hallmark experience where everyone feels welcome.”

Hmm. Shouldn’t your “top priority” be making quality movies that people will actually want to watch? Call us crazy, but shouldn’t that be the top priority of any entertainment company? Why is it so necessary to inundate the network with gay-themed movies that the core audience will reject? We get experimenting with it if you think it will bring you some better ratings, but the idea of doing it just to satisfy the boring, lifeless masses on Twitter strikes us as a terrible mistake.

We’re not exactly Hallmark Channel fans at the best of times, and we tend to find their Christmas movies insufferably idiotic and trite. That said, we get it. They are the television equivalent of comfort food, and we’re sure that some of their most ardent fans love all the cheesy predictability that we find off-putting. That’s cool – it’s a big country and there should be something out there for everyone. Why ruin it with social justice? Why destroy a wholesome, family network by throwing all of this LGBT junk on there? Isn’t there a whole network out there dedicated to nothing other than gay content? Go watch that!

But of course, this has nothing to do with making sure gay people have Christmas movies to watch. It is about finding a network that’s a little too white and a little too straight and declaring that a bad thing in 2020.

Has there ever been a civilization in history that hated itself as much as modern America?
