Federal Air Marshall whistleblowers reportedly informed Gabbard on August 4 that her name had been added to the TSA’s “Quiet Skies” watchlist on July 23. From that day onward, she and her husband, Abraham Williams, began to experience thorough and repeated TSA screenings during their travels. The allegations raise significant questions about the integrity and transparency of such government watchlists.

Responses From Lawmakers

Hawaii legislators quickly responded to Gabbard’s predicament. Representatives Gene Ward, Diamond Garcia, David Alcos, and Elijah Pierick issued a joint letter demanding that TSA Director David Pekoske either remove Gabbard’s name from the watchlist or provide full transparency regarding her inclusion. In their letter, they emphasized the importance of upholding the fundamental rights and integrity of American citizens.

“Sir, please remember this is the United States of America, and you have not even stated why such a dastardly label has been attached to and besmirched her good name,” the letter read. “We strongly urge you to immediately withdraw her name from the Quiet Skies program and/or provide full public transparency of the TSA’s reasons for maligning her name and reputation.”

In response, the TSA issued a statement explaining that the Quiet Skies program uses a risk-based approach and does not confirm or deny individual matches to its rules. This, however, has not eased the concerns surrounding the transparency and oversight of the program, established in 2012 to enhance aviation security by monitoring travelers who may present an elevated risk based on travel patterns and intelligence.

Gabbard’s Evolving Ordeal

According to Gabbard, the heightened scrutiny began on the very day she was officially added to the watchlist. When asked about her experiences, she described the screenings as intensive and lasting anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes each time she traveled via air. She also revealed that at least three air marshals were consistently assigned to monitor her during her travels, raising more questions about the extent of surveillance she has been subjected to.

“As I was traveling, I endured 30 to 45 minutes of screening every time I went to the airport to fly,” she said during an interview on Fox News. “I noticed air marshals, K-9 teams, and other unusual measures. The deepest pain and harm caused by this is that forever going forward, I will always be looking over my shoulder wondering if and how my government is surveilling me.”
