Trump Strikes Back: We “Will Be Withholding Funds From Sanctuary Cities”

Armed with a recent court decision that will allow the Trump administration to go forward with a plan to withhold grant money from sanctuary jurisdictions, President Trump said Thursday that the federal government would go ahead and do just that. Trump said it was important for his administration to crack down on these cities and the inherent danger to public safety that they pose.

“As per recent Federal Court ruling, the Federal Government will be withholding funds from Sanctuary Cities. They should change their status and go non-Sanctuary,” he tweeted. “Do not protect criminals!”

The recent federal court ruling in question came down from the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals last month. The court overturned a decision that had previously blocked the Trump administration from withholding Byrne Grants from cities that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Cities like New York and Chicago filed suit against the administration in an effort to keep getting those funds. But now, in light of the new ruling, Trump will be able to move forward with the rule and put significant financial pressure on cities that harbor illegal alien criminals.

While blocking the grant money should prove to be an effective tool, the Trump administration is not stopping there.

“Intensifying its enforcement in so-called sanctuary cities across the country, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has begun 24-hour-a-day surveillance operations around the homes and workplaces of undocumented immigrants,” reports The New York Times. “The agency plans to deploy hundreds of additional officers in unmarked cars in the coming weeks to increase arrests in cities where local law enforcement agencies do not cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.

“ICE leadership has requested at least 500 special agents who normally conduct long-term investigations into dangerous criminals and traffickers to join the enhanced arrest campaign rolling out in sanctuary cities,” the report continues.

These cities have brought this on themselves. No one asked them to act as a local arm of federal enforcement. No one asked the NYPD to go door to door and round up illegal immigrants. All that was asked of them was some basic cooperation: If you have an illegal alien in custody on criminal charges, give us a call. Help us out. We’re all in this together, right?

That’s all. Simple. Easy. Lawful.

They couldn’t abide by that basic request. Instead, these cities and states went in the opposite direction. They passed laws forbidding local officials from cooperating with ICE. They passed laws forbidding even private employers from calling the feds (putting those employers in danger of federal consequences themselves, mind you). They handed out driver’s licenses to illegals and then hid that documentation from Washington. And, when they hear of enforcement raids, they send out tips and legal advice to the illegal aliens in their communities.

This defiance of federal law is a national disgrace, and it must end. And if these cities are too “progressive” to end these policies on their own, Trump is going to do it for them.
