Former President Donald Trump has called himself “honest and innocent” and has once again blasted the Department of Justice (DOJ) following the announcement that a special counsel would be overlooking the investigations into Trump.
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed veteran prosecutor Jack Smith to act as special counsel and to oversee the investigation into former President Trump. Smith is also expected to give his own opinion on whether he believes that charges should be filed against Trump.
Trump has called this announcement “appalling” and continued to say that the investigation was a “Witch-hunt”. These statements were made during a speech at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
Earlier that week Trump had announced his presidential campaign for 2024. This announcement came only one week after the midterm elections in which the Republicans were able to secure the House majority but not the Senate.
Trump added that he thought the DOJ’s investigation into him was “dead” after the defeat of Republican Representative Liz Cheney, who was the vice chair of the House of Representatives Select Committee investigating the Capitol attack events on January 6, 2021.
Trump had said that while he thought that case was dead, the Justice Department which is “corrupt and highly political” has managed to bring it back through the appointment of a “super radical left special counsel” who is going to be restarting the entire process.
He added that they are looking for ways to harm the “greatest movement in the history of our country” as well as to harm Trump as an individual. Trump also said that he had “gotten used to it.”
