Trump Slapped With Criminal Referrals?

According to some reports, the Jan. 6 select committee is planning on holding a vote on at least three criminal referrals that specifically target former President Trump. This would mark a significant move forward as the panel is going to be expiring soon and ending its investigation.

On Friday multiple outlets reported that the committee was planning on recommending that the Department of Justice press criminal charges against Trump not only for the insurrection but also for trying to block an official proceeding of Congress and conspiring to defraud the United States.

The referrals that the committee is planning to make are widely seen as symbolic of the work they have achieved. It is also worth noting that the Department of Justice has the right to choose whether it will consider the referrals or not, especially as they are running its own investigation into the events that took place on Jan. 6, 2021.

According to a Politico report, the committee’s argument for seeking insurrection charges relates to a ruling made by U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta in February, where he points out that the language used by Trump was used to incite the violence that took place on Jan. 6.
