Democrats who, just a week ago, were heaping praise on the Black Lives Matter protesters packed tightly into the streets of many American cities, have done an immediate about-face on the dangers of gathering in crowds. Why the sudden change of heart? Well, President Donald Trump announced this week that he will resume his legendary rallies, of course. And now, apparently forgetting that they already determined that the public could put social distancing aside if the cause was personally important to them, these same Democrats are accusing Trump of compounding the coronavirus crisis.
Last week, Sen. Bernie Sanders – the great, white hope of American socialism – acted the role of proud papa when racial activists filled the streets of Minneapolis, New York City, Atlanta, and elsewhere.
“Congratulations to all who are out on the streets today peacefully protesting. Together, we will end police brutality. Together, we will defeat Trump. Together, we will fight for a government based on justice and compassion, not greed and lies,” he said, making no mention of the deadly pandemic.
A few days later, he sounded a much different note: “Trump wants 15,000 delegates cheering him at his GOP convention in Florida. No social distancing. His rejection of medical advice endangers not only those there but those they come in contact with. Trump’s a threat to the health and well-being of the country. He must be defeated.”
Right. Trump must be defeated because he’s putting people in danger of catching the coronavirus by holding an event with large crowds and no social distancing. He’ll be defeated with the power of activists groups who hold protests with large crowds and no social distancing.
Sounds like LeftyLogic to us!
How about Florida’s Rep. Val Demings, who is on the short-list to join Biden’s 2020 ticket. On Monday, she said she was proud to join a “Healing and Hope” protest so that she could “speak with our community as America grieves.”
Three days later, she said, “The president’s plan to hold mass rallies in Florida and elsewhere as we experience a resurgence in COVID cases is irresponsible and selfish.”
Ooh, we love hypocrisy so fresh that you could sell it as Subway.
Much as Democrats changed their tune in a hurry when they moved from condemning the anti-lockdown protests to praising the racial protests, here they are again with the utterly illogical idea that the public health threat posed by mass gatherings depends entirely upon the reason for their existence. Americans should ask themselves if they really want to put people who rely on that kind of magical thinking in charge of the country.
