Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said that Congress should not “exclude the possibility” that the mishandling of classified documents by President Biden could have led to national security risks. The classified documents found in Biden’s possession are now being investigated by the Department of Justice.
Schiff told ABC’s “This Week” in an interview with Jonathan Karl that he would like to know two things, firstly what these documents were and what the special counsel’s final assessment is. He added that the appointment of a special counsel, Robert Hur, was the proper course of action in this case.
Following months of the Democrats criticizing former President Trump for the hundreds of classified documents found in his Mar-a-Lago estate, the table has now turned, as Biden was also discovered to have classified documents from his time as Vice President stored accidentally in an old office in his Delaware home.
On Thursday, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Hur’s appointment as special counsel, this was a decision that Schiff fully supported as justice needs to be “evenly applied.” He further added that the appointment of a special counsel was in fact the only option that Garland had.
However, despite everything the Democrats have been quick to point out the key differences between Trump’s and Biden’s cases. The most important of these is the fact that Biden was quick to notify the necessary agencies as soon as the documents were found, while Trump deliberately tried to not hand the classified documents in. The scale is also different as hundreds of documents were seized from Trump’s estate while there were less than two dozen documents found misplaced in Biden’s possession.
