Sesame Street Theme Park Sued for Racial Discrimination

A Baltimore family just filed a $25 million lawsuit against Sesame Place, a theme park in Pennsylvania, claiming their daughters were the targets of racial discrimination after being ignored by characters in costume.

The filing comes not long after a video of a Sesame Place employee dressed as Rosita seemingly ignoring two black girls during a parade went viral online, sparking nationwide outrage and accusations of racism. Social media was flooded with examples of similar incidents that allegedly took place at the amusement park, which only helped fuel the fury.

Per Daily Mail, the suit seeks class action status as 25-30 families have come forward with similar claims. It was filed in a federal court in Philadelphia against SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, the owner of Sesame Place, alleging “pervasive and appalling race discrimination.”

The lawsuit claims that four amusement park employees dressed as Sesame Street characters intentionally ignored Quinton Burns, his daughter Kennedi Burns, and other black guests during a meet-and-greet event on June 18. The family insists the employees’ behavior was an example of racism.

The lawsuit says “SeaWorld’s performers readily engaged with numerous similarly situated white customers.”

“Just looking at her face, it makes me want to cry every time I see it,” Burns said of his daughter during a press conference on Wednesday.

“[Kennedi] was ignored amongst a sea of other young white children who were able to interact, give hugs, high fives,” attorney Malcolm Ruff said during the press conference. “Kennedi was forced to experience racism at the age of 5. This is unacceptable and we will not stand by and let this continue.”

“We will review the lawsuit filed on behalf of Mr. Burns. We look forward to addressing that claim through the established legal process. We are committed to deliver an inclusive, equitable and entertaining experience for all our guests,” Sesame Street reps replied to the filing in a statement to Eyewitness News.

Reps for the amusement park apologized multiple times for the viral video of the two little girls appearing to be ignored, The Daily Wire previously reported, but their apologies were not enough to assuage skeptics.

“We sincerely apologize to the family for their experience in our park on Saturday; we know that it’s not ok. We are taking actions to do better. We are committed to making this right. We will conduct training for our employees so they better understand, recognize and deliver an inclusive, equitable, and entertaining experience for our guests,” a statement at the time said.

“For over 40 years Sesame Place has worked to uphold the values of respect, inclusion and belonging. We are committed to doing a better job making children and families feel special, seen and included when they come to our parks.”

Per Daily Mail, the mother of the two girls from the video, Jodi Brown, didn’t believe the company was being sincere.

“I don’t believe it was genuine, I believe they were just putting out statements due to how viral the video has gone,” Brown said.

  1. Do these people not have anything else to be upset about, something that actually matters? So the Sesame characters did not pay strict attention to their darlings, big deal. There are thousands of kids at those things. Do you expect the characters to hug every one of them? I have seen do many of these nonsense videos., and yes sometimes the black child gets ignored, and sometimes it is the white, yellow or brown child. Don’t expect everyone to zone in on your kid. Life doesn’t work that way. Sometimes we get ignored. It is not always intentional. Quit belly aching and teach your kid that sometimes people are busy, or not thinking about everyone around them. People are so lawsuit happy, guess they are expecting a big pay day.

    • I agree, well said. I, too, am sick and tired of some parasite looking to make a few bucks or a free ride crying racism!
I agree , have some integrity and act like a human being and teach your kids that every child gets preferential treatment. Apparently, these are the blacks that have a problem with themselves and are themselves the racist.
What hypocrites, they should spend more time teaching your their children to be good human beings and not to expect preferential treatment because of the color of their skin.

  2. By far the best solution is that black people who dont like USA go back to Africa. And then do not cry about the low liiving standard when you are back in Africa.

  3. I’d love to ban THESE IMBECILES from the face of the earth, PERMANENTLY!

  4. Go somewhere else, for gosh sakes! If you don’t like the way your day goes, just leave. What an example for the children – – SUE, SUE, SUE, oh, and let’s throw in that other abominal word that is so freely used for every unnewsworthy incident that occurs – – racism! That is another word that should be stricken from the dictionary. Pres Obama brought about the reemergence of racism into this country and it’s been a war of division ever since!! I don’t care if your little darling was overlooked, so be it. Do as I’ve done and show a little integrity. If you said nothing your kid would move on to the next spot and have a blast. Chalk it up, and go someplace else next time. Like change channel or just turn off the tv!! It’s disgusting watching these people blow up over not picking things!!!

  5. When you look for racism at every turn you are sure to find it whether or not it exists. We can thank the democratic party for creating a nation of perennial victims. This does not however mean that racism does not exist but when the cries of racism are constant and never-ending how can anyone know for sure. The reality of suing for such an exorbitant amount creates an air of suspicion surrounding the entire incident. Thereby casting more than a modicum of doubt about the claims. If people with dark skin think they are the only ones being excluded in this world they are very much mistaken. Just read the studies on how people are treated based on appearance alone and you will find that race rarely comes into play. If the claimants were only asking for a refund I would trend towards believing them but since 25 million is the request I simply don’t.

  6. I agree I dont believe they were ignoring the black children, if they were that pisses me off too. Children are children, they watch your show just like White children . I just think they were just putting on a show, working you know and i watched it, they “ignored” the white children too. If i find out they were ignoring the black children i will be PISSED!!!. I think you should not believe just because you are black you think you are being ignored. That is stupid.

  7. we need to place blame for these nuisance lawsuits where it belongs on skinflint , corrupt , ambulance chasing lawyers who if there is a settlement get most of the money!! other comments are right on !! Too many make work lawyers out there gumming up the works and promising pay days for butt hurt thin skins

  8. Absolutely insane, the rest of kids are also upset because are now showing only blacks or Spanish people including kids, othe races are also upset because they aren’t getting anything anymore.
