News broke on Thursday that Hunter Biden is under an ongoing criminal investigation by the Department of Justice, apparently relating to securities fraud, money laundering, and some deals he made in connection with his uncle, Jim Biden. In an interview with Fox News, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AK) said that it is unacceptable to leave the younger Biden’s judicial fate in the hands of a Justice Department that will soon be under the direct control of his father’s political appointee.
“These investigations span multiple jurisdictions and if Joe Biden becomes president then all of those prosecutors are in line to be fired next month. If there were ever circumstances that created a conflict of interest and called for a special counsel, I think those circumstances are present here,” Cotton said. “The Biden family has been trading on Joe Biden’s public office for fifty years. Do we really think that that will change if Joe Biden becomes president, the highest office in the land?”
In a statement on Wednesday, Hunter Biden acknowledged that he’s being scrutinized by the U.S. Attorney in Delaware.
“I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors,” Biden said.
Well, this is a no-brainer. If Hunter Biden was involved in criminal activity (and what, honestly, are the chances that he wasn’t?), then he needs to be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law – NOT who happens to be sitting in the Oval Office. This is a conflict of interest that goes beyond the normal parameters. If it was inappropriate for Hunter Biden to be working with a Ukrainian energy company at a time when his father was in charge of U.S.-Ukraine relations, then it is absurdly inappropriate for him to be under criminal investigation while his father is in charge of the country. A special counsel needs to be appointed BEFORE Joe Biden is sworn in next month (assuming that actually happens).
In the meantime, the media needs to apologize to its viewers and readers for not bringing the story of Hunter Biden’s criminal history to the public before the election was in the rearview mirror. We won’t hold our breath, though…
