If there’s one consistent aspect of liberal woke ideology, it’s that we can gather all the information we need about racism by looking at the end results of a system. For instance, if there is a higher percentage of blacks incarcerated than whites, we know the justice system is racist. And then we can apply the same standard to education: If more blacks are failing than whites, then we know that the school system is racist. The idea that something else might be at the root of the problem is not just dismissed but actively attacked as racist in and of itself.
This is how we get what’s going on in San Diego these days, where the Unified School District decided that it’s time to stop holding students accountable for their own grades. The second-largest school district in California has approved an overhaul of the grading system where kids will no longer be graded based on their yearly averages or penalized for turning assignments in late.
“This is part of our honest reckoning as a school district,” said District Vice President Richard Barrera. “If we’re actually going to be an anti-racist school district, we have to confront practices like this that have gone on for years and years.”
Practices like…grading students based on the work they turned in (or, as the case may be, did not)? Yeah, what were the schools thinking??
“According to data presented by the district, under the old grading system, teachers fail minority students more than White students – a lot more,” reports NBC 7. “During the first semester of last year, 30% of all D or F grades were given to English learners. One in four, 25%, of failing marks went to students with disabilities. By ethnicity, 23% went to Native Americans. Another 23% of failing grades went to Hispanics. And 20% of D or F grades went to Black students. By comparison, just 7% of failing marks went to White students.”
You have to love the way this was reported, starting with the phrase, “Teachers fail…” The subtle idea here, we suppose, is that racist teachers are going out of their way to flunk black and brown students to make sure the white hegemony on power continues uninterrupted. Somehow, we kinda doubt that. But if that’s not the case, then there’s obviously something systemically unfair in the very CONCEPT of grades, which is apparently the conclusion reached by the San Diego Unified School District.
NBC 7 spoke to high school junior Zachary Patterson, who said that his peers are totally on board with the new plan.
“I know students all across the school district are really happy with the idea that these other accountability measures are no longer going to be defining their understanding of knowledge,” said Patterson.
Yeah, imagine that.
