If any one Democrat deserves the credit (or blame) for Joe Biden being the president-elect, that honor (?) should probably go to Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina. The House Majority Whip threw his muscle behind Biden at precisely the right time in the primaries, rescuing Biden from what looked like a disastrous Super Tuesday outing in the making. Biden was coming off two straight losses in Iowa and New Hampshire when he arrived on South Carolina’s doorstep. Clyburn told African-American voters to get out and make the man the nominee. And they did.
Now Clyburn is enjoying his moment in the sun, soaking up accolades from Democrats eager to celebrate him for putting his support behind Biden. And in the meantime, he’s got some very stale theories about why Donald Trump isn’t conceding the election. In an interview with CNN on Sunday, Clyburn suggested that (sigh) Russia might be behind the scheme.
“Joe Biden’s been the president-elect for about 24 hours now,” CNN’s Jake Tapper said. “President Trump has not conceded the race. Should Trump concede the race? How should president-elect Biden handle this potentially volatile situation?”
“Well, I think Trump should concede,” Clyburn replied. “But I also think that the Republican Party has a responsibility here. This country is bigger than any one person. This democracy is teetering. He called it an inflection point. We are in a very dire set of consequences here. And we had better get hold of ourselves and this country and stop catering to whims of one person.
“So, it doesn’t matter to me whether or not he concedes,” he continued. “What matters to me is whether or not the Republican Party will step up and help us preserve the integrity of this democracy. We have been the envy of the world, but we have also received a lot of disdain from places around the world. See, I’m old enough to remember Nikita Khrushchev. I remember that speech at the United Nations when he looked out and says: ‘We will bury you.’”
He concluded: “I will never forget that. And so, I don’t understand how Republicans can allow Putin to dictate the fortunes of this country. And that is what is going on here.”
Has there ever been a bigger boogeyman in history than Russian President Vladimir Putin? How many investigations have to be conducted? How many grand media reports have to fail? How many times does Adam Schiff have to be exposed as a liar before Democrats get it through their heads: This Russia-Russia-Russia narrative doesn’t feed the dog!
By the way, note that Putin has been largely contained over the last four years. How far into Biden’s presidency do we get before he starts getting grabby with Ukrainian land? How long until he starts getting aggressive in the Baltics? Say what you want about Trump’s presidency, but it was a peaceful one.
We’ll see how long that continues.
