(PatriotNewsDaily.com) – A new Siena College Research Institute poll shows that around half of registered N.Y. Republicans wanted to see Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) resign from the House chamber.

Santos is currently facing a number of investigations both on the reported lies he told regarding his background as well as for potentially not abiding by all the rules regarding campaign funding. The poll was originally released on Monday and showed that 49 percent of Republican respondents believed that Santos should resign while 26 percent believed he should be able to maintain his position in Congress.

When it comes to Democratic respondents, 64 percent believed that Santos should resign while only 17 percent thought that the first-time Representative should retain his position.

The majority of Independents also leaned towards Santos resigning, with 59 percent supporting his resignation and only 10 percent disagreeing.

In terms of his popularity, only 16 percent of respondents said they had a favorable view of the Congressman. What’s more surprising is that 20 percent of Democrats viewed Santos favorably, while only 15 percent of Republicans and 9 percent of Independents held a similar view.

In contrast, 56 percent of respondents said they held an unfavorable view of Santos.

Santos won against Democrat Robert Zimmerman in New York’s 3rd Congressional District in the midterm elections. However, he is currently under a federal investigation over possible campaign finance violations. Nassau County’s district attorney has also launched a probe into Santos’ inconsistencies regarding his past. Santos appears to have lied about his cultural heritage, employment background, and academic achievements.
