House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) has joined those who have called for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In a recent interview with Breitbart News on Friday, Emmer called for Mayorkas to be impeached after noting that the Homeland Security secretary has intentionally failed to act. With this statement, Emmer became the highest-ranking GOP leader to call for Mayorkas’ impeachment.

Last week during an interview with The Hill, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) also slammed Mayorkas and even signaled that the Republicans were preparing to take action against him. However, he did not call for Mayorkas to be impeached. At the time he stated that there were many doubts and questions about his competence and added that the committee was looking into the options they had for keeping Mayorkas accountable.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson responded in a statement to Emmer’s call for Mayorkas to be impeached, urging Congress to pass immigration reform legislation. In the statement, it was noted that the Department was continuously working to enforce the laws of the land and secure the border. They added that Congress needed to collaborate with the department in order to pass legislation that would help fix the immigration system, which they claim is broken.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has repeatedly claimed that House Republicans would not impeach any Biden administration officials without first having an investigation.

Reps. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and Pat Fallon (R-TX) have both filed impeachment articles against Mayorkas. The resolutions have been signed collectively by 57 House Republicans.
