On Wednesday, North Korea announced that they had carried out another nuclear test, this one being – if the Hermit Kingdom is to be believed – the largest one yet. The country, ruled by dictator Kim Jong Un, insists that it successfully detonated a hydrogen bomb in an underground explosion. If the reports are accurate – and many analysts say there is reason to be skeptical – it would indicate a North Korea that has grown more dangerous than ever before.
Immediately, several of the leading Republican presidential candidates hammered President Obama for letting the situation get to this point.
On Fox News, Republican frontrunner Donald Trump said that Obama should be making China address the madman they support. “Nobody is talking to them whatsoever, and nobody is discussing it with China. China has total control, believe me. They say they don’t – they have total control over North Korea, and China should solve that problem,” he said.
Trump continued, telling the network that China’s refusal to help should come with repercussions. “If they don’t solve the problem, we should make trade very difficult for China. North Korea is totally under their control. Without China, they wouldn’t eat.”
Even with China, incidentally, there are confirmed reports of widespread human suffering – including starvation – in North Korea.
“If this test is confirmed, it will be just the latest example of the failed Obama-Clinton foreign policy,” Marco Rubio said in a statement. “I have been warning throughout this campaign that North Korea is run by a lunatic who has been expanding his nuclear arsenal while President Obama has stood idly by.”
Yes, well, the Obama Doctrine appears to be built on a foundation of standing idly by. This president is happy to ignore the growing dangers in the world, and his reluctance to turn off his political orientation is legendary. Every president who has ever taken office, no matter which party they belong to, has been forced to abandon their campaign platform at some time or another for the good of the country. At least once. Not Obama, though. Regardless of how obvious it gets that his foreign policy is turning the world into a much more dangerous place, he won’t budge.
As unlikely as it might be to imagine, a North Korean nuclear attack could easily kill more Americans in one blast than are killed by guns in a year. And when it comes to Kim Jong Un, the usual “Oh, they wouldn’t dare” protests simply don’t apply. There is every reason to believe that this guy is literally insane. If he has the technology, he is to be taken seriously. He is to be stopped. This president simply will not spend the energy to protect his country.
