Republican Senators Seek Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities

Though at times it feels as if Democrats have grabbed all of the forward momentum when it comes to illegal immigration, it’s good to know there are still Republicans in Washington fighting back with everything they have. While the left is busy decrying the “concentration camps” on the border, Sen. Thom Tillis is making sure that the country doesn’t forget the American citizens who have had their families and lives destroyed by the Democrats’ reckless immigration policies.

On Tuesday, the North Carolina Republican introduced the Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act, aimed at holding “sanctuary jurisdictions accountable for failing to comply with lawful detainer and release notification requests made by federal authorities and jeopardizing public safety.”

“Earlier this month, the Mecklenburg County (NC) Sheriff’s Office refused to notify ICE and comply with a lawful detainer request when it released a dangerous illegal immigrant from county jail who was charged with multiple domestic violence charges for strangling a woman and threatening to kill her,” Tillis said in a press release accompanying the legislation. “This was only one of more than 20 troubling instances this year of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office releasing potentially dangerous individuals after refusing to comply with detainer requests. The reckless sanctuary policy prompted criticism from the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.”

Tillis said his bill would create “a private right of civil action for the victims of sanctuary jurisdictions.” In other words, it would enable victims of these policies to pursue legal action against the city, county, or state that let illegal alien criminals go free.

“It’s disturbing to see sheriffs across North Carolina establish sanctuary jurisdictions, releasing dangerous individuals back into communities while refusing to notify federal immigration officials,” Tillis said. “If politicians want to prioritize reckless sanctuary policies over public safety, they should also be willing to provide just compensation for the victims.”

Tillis was joined by co-sponsors Lindsay Graham (R-SC), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), and Joni Ernst (R-IA).

“The American people, and Texas communities in particular, are tired of seeing our federal immigration laws flouted and criminal illegal immigrants enabled to commit future crimes and escape prosecution,” Cruz said in support of the bill.

It’s high time that Republicans take action that will hold Democrats in California, Oregon, Chicago, New York, and elsewhere accountable for the death, mayhem, and criminality that they are welcoming with their misguided, reckless policies. Maybe if these jurisdictions are sued into oblivion, they will finally recognize the folly of their ways.
