Chris Christie, former governor of New Jersey, continues his attacks against his former ally, Donald Trump, who intends to make a third run for the White House in 2024.

On Monday, Christie said that the GOP field needs a candidate who is going to be able to go after Trump during the debate the same way that Christie went after Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) in a 2016 debate. Christie, who is known for his sharp remarks, had at the time mocked the senator for both his lack of experience and for using the same “25-second memorized speech” repeatedly.

During a town hall at Saint Anselm College on Monday, he went on to say that the only way to bring Trump down was by having a candidate do the same to him that he had done to Rubio. This requires not only skill, as he pointed out, but also that the candidate is “fearless” because Trump will snap right back at them.

A week earlier, Christie made another comment about Trump, claiming that he was surrounded by a “circus.” This comment came after Trump’s earlier assertions that he would be arrested in connection to the Manhattan District Attorney’s probe. Christie said, at the time, on ABC’s “This Week” that “the circus continues” and that Trump was profiting from the “chaos and turmoil,” which was why he was trying to create that situation on his own terms.
