In an interview with “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Muslim Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) said that while the House Democratic leadership was still reluctant to pursue impeachment charges against President Trump, she was personally confident that the numbers would soon become overwhelming.
Responding to host Chuck Todd, who asked why there wasn’t more support for impeachment inside the Democratic caucus, Tlaib – known for once telling supporters “we’re gonna impeach the mother**ker” – said it was only a matter of time now.
“I think it’s moving towards that,” she said. “It’s going to demand it. It already is.”
Tlaib then listed off a handful of Trump’s supposed misdeeds, none of which rise even close to the level of impeachment.
Todd then asked Tlaib if Democrats were holding off on impeachment for fear of turning voters off as we head into an election year.
“This is not about the 2020 election,” insisted Tlaib. “It’s about doing what’s right now for our country. This is going to be a precedent that we set when we don’t hold this president accountable to the rule of the law and to the United States Constitution.”
We don’t know about any of that, but there are signs that Tlaib is right about the movement of the party inside Congress. A closed-door meeting last week proved that top Democrats are sharply divided on the issue of impeachment. Pelosi is still standing firm against the idea, no doubt believing that impeachment is a dead end that will result in an enormous Trump victory in the Senate…not to mention the voting booth next November. Meanwhile, she’s facing down the likes of Democrats like Steve Cohen, who think impeachment hearings should have begun the day William Barr refused to show up to testify.
Worse, the outside pressure is getting stronger as well.
From NBC News:
A liberal activist group is ramping up pressure on Democratic congressional leaders with a new campaign to begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.
Stand Up America, which says it has amassed 2.4 million members since former congressional candidate Sean Eldridge founded it after Trump’s election, will begin pushing those members to call, confront and otherwise lobby Democratic members of the House to start the impeachment process.
The campaign kicks off on Tuesday, when the group will begin running digital ads to broadcast its message while also emailing and text messaging its members with information on how to contact their representatives.
Democrats are about to stumble headfirst into the biggest political mistake they’ve made since elevating Hillary Clinton to the top of the 2016 ticket. They have absolutely nothing upon which to base an impeachment trial, and they are going to look like absolute fools trying to prove their case in front of the American people.
We’re quite excited to see it go down. In flames.
