(PatriotNewsDaily.com) – Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has backed a state bill in New York that would take away the tax-exempt status from nonprofits in the state if they have previously used their funds in support of settlement and military activities by Israel.
The bill was introduced by state Sen. Jabari Brisport and Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani and is called the “Not on Our Dime” Act. The act had been introduced before the Oct. 7th attack by Hamas on Israel and was just aiming to stop donations from being used to subsidize violence committed by Israel in the West Bank.
According to a report by The Times, the bill was considered to be a “nonstarter.” However, following the escalation of the war in Gaza, there have been some lawmakers who are reconsidering their position on it.
Ocasio-Cortez argued during a news conference that now it was more important than ever before to ensure that the Israeli government was being held accountable and argued that supporting the violence by Israeli settlers would only prevent long-lasting peace. The bill will also oppose the conflict currently unfolding in the West Bank and Gaza. She proceeded to point out that the assistance of armed militias in the region was not useful to the New York state, hence why those nonprofits should not be benefitting from the state’s charitable tax exemptions.
The bill would also give the state the right to sue nonprofits more than $1 million as well as revoke their tax exemption statuses.
