(PatriotNewsDaily.com) – Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said the 60-day timeline on a report about security breakdowns leading to the attempt on former President Donald Trump’s life is “not acceptable.”
Secret Service Director Kimberley Cheatle, who testified before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee on Monday, had revealed to the Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) that the target for an internal mission assurance investigation was 60 days.
Cortez (D-NY) highlighted that the country is experiencing “an especially concentrated presidential campaign,” a reference to President Joe Biden dropping out of the race and Vice President Kamala Harris launching her bid for President on Sunday.
The New York Democrat also emphasized that the elections would occur in roughly 100 days; therefore, having the report “finalized in 60 days… prior to any actionable decisions… is simply not acceptable.”
The progressive lawmaker also noted that it had been “10 days since an assassination attempt on a former President,” and there needed to be “answers,” adding that it was necessary to make policy decisions quickly that could “require legislation” that lawmakers would need to “pass in the immediate term.”
Cheatle replied by telling Ocasio-Cortez she wasn’t waiting on the report to take action; instead, analysis had been ongoing and the agency was “adding additional features” to its security details since the incident.
Cheatle also pointed out that besides the Secret Service’s internal investigation, there were “a number” of investigations into the incident, including a Department of Justice probe.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas also announced on Sunday the launch of a bipartisan panel to carry out a 45-day review of the assassination attempt.
