(PatriotNewsDaily.com) – Following the recent pro-Palestinian rally promoted by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) which has six Democrats in the House of Representatives among its members, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and others have attempted to create some distance from the conflict.
The protest took place on Sunday in Times Square and was organized by DSA. The protestors walked from 42nd Street to Bryant Part which is located near the Israeli consulate. The organization had previously stated that the recent Hamas attacks against Israel were Israel’s fault. In a post on social media, they stated that Israel’s “apartheid regime” was directly responsible for the recent attacks. They further pointed out that the United States government had given billions of dollars in funding to the regime.
Those who participated in the rally destroyed and burned an Israeli flag, while also carrying an image of a swastika to show Israeli supporters. Others had signs that called for all U.S. funding to Israel to end and for Palestine to be returned to Palestinians.
Ocasio-Cortez, who is a member of a New York chapter of the DSA, told Politico that it should be easy to “shut down hatred and antisemitism.” She added that the bigotry exhibited during the Times Square protest was “unacceptable” and that it did not speak to what the majority of New Yorkers believed who have condemned the horrific attacks while also not being supportive of the injustices faced by Palestinians who are under occupation.
Rep. Zohran Mamdani from New York who previously had the support of DSA during the election, also spoke up against the sentiments expressed at the rally. As Mamdani told the outlet, his support for Palestinian liberation does not mean that he supports the murder of hundreds of civilians or the rally’s rhetoric.
