President Barack Obama gave his farewell address from Chicago on Tuesday, and you could spend the rest of January parsing through the lies, exaggerations, and partisan claims he made in what should have been a classy final speech to the nation. But one claim stood out as being ridiculous even by this administration’s standards, and it doesn’t make it any less preposterous just because he’s said it before.
“Because of the extraordinary courage of our men and women in uniform, and the intelligence officers, law enforcement, and diplomats who support them, no foreign terrorist organization has successfully planned and executed an attack on our homeland these past eight years,” Obama said.
This is at least the second time Obama has made this extraordinary claim since the first of the year, and it hasn’t improved with age. On both occasions, Obama has followed this claim up with an acknowledgement of the attacks against Boston, Orlando, and San Bernardino. His argument is that those attacks should be filed under a different category – foreign-inspired terrorist attacks, perhaps.
Frankly, though, it doesn’t matter to the victims or their families if these terrorists were trained at an ISIS camp or learned their jihadist propaganda over the internet. The source is the same, the ideology is the same, the intent is the same, and the effect is the same. Whether your deranged Muslim of the day was born in upstate New York or Mosul, it’s still Islamic terrorism. It’s still an act of war committed on U.S. soil.
So, sure, Obama can claim that none of these attacks were hatched on foreign soil, but that’s a meaningless distinction to make and a laughable thing to take credit for. If Obama had done his job for the last eight years, he would have eradicated ISIS and taken their propaganda machine down with them. He would have been uncompromising in his stance against Islamic extremism, and he would have directed the intelligence community to do whatever it takes – within the bounds of the Constitution – to keep American safe.
Instead, he let things slide. He made choices that allowed ISIS and other terrorist organizations to thrive. And when American citizens paid for his apathy, he rushed to apologize for Islam and to push his fanatic gun control agenda instead of owning up to his failures. Now he wants to pretend like he kept the country safe.
Keep dreaming, Mr. President.
