Obama Takes a Shot at Trump, But Ted Cruz Fires Back Hard

To give the devil his due, former President Barack Obama has done more than we suspected he would to keep his mouth shut about his successor. We expected to see #44 on cable news with regularity after President Trump took office, using his perch in Washington D.C. to take frequent shots at the man who once questioned his citizenship. But he hasn’t. He’s been remarkably restrained, even as Trump has gone about the business of restoring America from his disastrous eight years in office.

But then, Obama does occasionally crawl out of his hiding place to toss a grenade at the White House. He did so this week in a social media post where he took a veiled jab at Trump for his response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’ve seen all too terribly the consequences of those who denied warnings of a pandemic. We can’t afford any more consequences of climate denial,” he wrote. “All of us, especially young people, have to demand better of our government at every level and vote this fall.”

First of all, it’s astonishing to see any leftist – much less the former president – focused on the ephemeral threat of climate change at a time when thousands of people are dying from this virus. Like, really? You’re worried about fuel emissions at a time like this?

Second, Obama of all people should understand that the president doesn’t sit in the Oval Office with a crystal ball. Trump acted more quickly than any Democrat would have in shutting down travel from China. And since most of the rest of the response problems come down to onerous federal regulations, we’d say Obama is as much to blame as Trump. Quite possibly more so.

Third…well, why don’t we give Sen. Ted Cruz the microphone for this part.

“Bold: Obama calls for the overwhelming electoral defeat of Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi, after they opposed and demagogued Trump’s China travel ban, which helped slow the coronavirus pandemic,” Cruz tweeted.

Exactly. What more needs to be said. Trump took massive action at the end of January to slow the spread of the virus and Democrats stood back, wrung their hands, and accused him of xenophobia. Actually, Pelosi went one better than that: She went down to San Francisco’s Chinatown and encouraged people to come out and shop and eat at their restaurants. How many people got infected by following her suggestions?

And while Cruz didn’t mention NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, that’s another good example of a Democrat who was a coronavirus denier right up until mid-March.

In other words, just shut up, Barack. You’re easier to like when we don’t have to hear from you. Like, at all.
