President Obama’s Department of Education is on the warpath, threatening Township High School District 211 with sanctions if they don’t stop discriminating against transgender students. The Palatine, Illinois school district, they say, is violating the Title IX law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex.
What did the school district do that raised the ire of the Obama administration? Did they force the transgender student to sit in the closet while the rest of the students ate lunch? Did teachers throw chalky erasers at the transgender student every time they arrived in class?
No, this case is based in a complaint filed by a transgender female (that means a girl who used to be a boy, for those who grow confused about these terms), accusing the school district of not allowing her full use of the girls’ locker room. Not use period, mind you. Unlimited use. See, the school came up with a compromise. They would be happy to change a student’s name on school records, they would dutifully change the little box on paperwork from M to F, and they would even allow these students to play on whichever sports teams they felt most comfortable with.
But it wasn’t enough. Because the school district hung up privacy curtains in the locker room and insisted that the student use that area to change, they are guilty of discrimination.
In a statement, Catherine Lhamon, a civil rights secretary in the DOE, said, “Township High School District 211 is not following the law because the district continues to deny a female student the right to use the girls’ locker room.”
Not really, though, huh?
No, not really at all.
Democrats. They’re always coming up with new and exciting ways to bring the iron hand of the federal government down on the people. You almost have to pause and admire them. Republicans can’t even defend a state law that mimics a federal law already in existence, but the Democrats can actually come up with a whole new gender and sell it to the American people! It’s fascinating.
But maybe it’s not really that surprising. After all, it’s tough to put conservative principles to work in your life. To accept that you are the captain of your own ship. To accept that to have a good life, you must uphold certain principles and virtues, even when it’s hard to do so. To accept that your way of life may not always be in alignment with what’s popular at the moment. It’s much easier to just let go and hope the winds of life blow you somewhere nice. It takes less energy to study Caitlyn Jenner than to study George Washington.
If there’s one thing any reasonable man can say, it’s that a nation filled with people bumbling around with their fingers crossed is soon to be doomed. The conservative answer is to inspire people to wake up, take the wheel, and guide their ship somewhere promising. The liberal answer is to distract people with fantasies of climate change and social inequality. And then, when they’re not looking, Democrats will take the wheel.
You don’t get to tell them where to take the ship, but hey, at least you don’t have to drive, right?
