Minneapolis: A Violent Case Study in What Happens When You Turn on Police

If leftists were driven by anything resembling logic and common sense, we would never again hear cries to “defund the police.” That’s because this year has given us several real-time case studies in what happens when a community (or, at the very least, elected officials) turn on law enforcement. Long story short: You get disaster.

Crime is at a multi-year high in New York City, where Mayor Bill de Blasio has turned the NYPD into his personal punching bag. In Seattle, we saw the slow-motion travesty that was the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone, which ended in three murders. In Portland, Oregon, the streets in certain areas are still unsafe after hours because of ongoing anarchy.

And then there’s Ground Zero itself: Minneapolis, Minnesota, where the death of a drug-addled felon led to all of this in the first place.

Whether or not George Floyd was truly the victim of police brutality – a matter of significant dispute – it was the aftermath that really hurt the city. The Democrats on the City Council, eager to pander to Black Lives Matter protesters destroying their own neighborhoods, vowed to defund and ABOLISH the Minneapolis Police Department. They ultimately turned their backs on that idiotic vow, but the combined hostility coming from Democrats and the people on the ground has had a dramatic impact on the state of law enforcement in Minneapolis.

And the result is – yes you guessed it – uncontrolled, rampant crime.

“The sound of gunfire has become so familiar across North Minneapolis that Cathy Spann worries she has grown numb to it,” reports the Washington Post. “Day and night the bullets zip through this predominantly Black neighborhood, hitting cars and homes and people. The scores of victims have included a 7-year-old boy, wounded in a drive-by shooting; a woman who took a bullet that came through her living room wall while she was watching television with her family; and a 17-year-old girl shot in the head and killed.”

Wow. We haven’t heard Black Lives Matter whisper a word about these black lives. Weird, huh?

“Nearly six months after George Floyd’s death here sparked massive protests and left a wide swath of the city burned and destroyed, Minneapolis is grappling with dueling crises: an unprecedented wave of violence and droves of officer departures that the Minneapolis Police Department warns could soon leave the force unable to respond to emergencies,” the report continues. “Homicides in Minneapolis are up 50 percent, with nearly 75 people killed across the city so far this year.”

You don’t even have to go as far as to defund and abolish the police to wind up with this result. Just denigrating them and demoralizing them is sufficient. Now imagine what Minneapolis would look like right now if they really did go through with getting rid of police altogether. True, there would be no more “George Floyds.” But is it better to have hundreds of black victims of non-police violence than even one victim who dies in handcuffs?

From everything we’ve seen from the BLM-aligned Left, we can only assume the answer is an emphatic yes.
