(PatriotNewsDaily.com) – As the GOP moves closer to selecting its presidential candidate, Donald Trump, the presumptive nominee, is weighing his options for a vice presidential pick. Among the candidates are two sitting senators whose selection could lead to gubernatorial appointments for their replacements.
Choosing Senator Marco Rubio of Florida would empower Governor Ron DeSantis to appoint Rubio’s successor. Similarly, if Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio is selected, Governor Mike DeWine would be responsible for appointing Vance’s replacement. Both governors have had their differences with Trump, stirring up discussions about whether their selections would align with the values of Trump’s MAGA base.
In efforts to smooth over previous conflicts, DeSantis and Trump held a private meeting in late April after a contentious Republican primary. Despite this, insiders report lingering trust issues that make Trump hesitant to hand such power to DeSantis, according to NBC News.
In Ohio, Trump’s relationship with DeWine has also been strained. Trump labeled DeWine as a “RINO” (Republican In Name Only) and actively opposed his preferred Senate candidate, Matt Dolan, in the recent primaries. Dolan’s defeat to a Trump-backed opponent, Bernie Moreno, might position him as a potential appointee by DeWine to fill Vance’s seat.
Former Ohio Representative Jim Renacci commented to NBC that DeWine, who is in his final term, seems indifferent to Trump’s perspectives.
Any appointment by DeSantis or DeWine would serve only until the next statewide election, maintaining these positions as temporary solutions. Strategies to curb DeSantis’s influence have been considered, including a scenario where Rubio might resign early to trigger a special election rather than a gubernatorial appointment, should he be chosen as Trump’s running mate.
Discussion among Trump’s circle also highlights Rubio’s appeal and risks. According to one of Trump’s associates, while Rubio can effectively communicate MAGA principles to a wider Spanish-speaking audience, his selection carries considerable risks.
Trump has maintained secrecy around his vice presidential vetting process, with potential candidates yet to receive in-depth questionnaires. The decision is expected to be announced closer to the GOP National Convention in July, as reported by NBC.
