(patriotnewsdaily.com) – Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) suggested that rather than former President Donald Trump choosing someone from his short list of possible running mates he should instead select Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R).

With the Republican National Convention set to start this week, it is expected that former President Donald Trump is planning on naming his running mate. His shortlist currently includes Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.) and J.D. Vance (Ohio), as well as North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R). In recent days Trump has also floated the possibility of Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) joining his campaign.

On Friday evening, during a panel interview on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” McCarthy argued that both Scott and Rubio were excellent options. However, he noted that if he wanted to win the race then he should choose Youngkin who would allow him to win instantly.

When Maher pushed back and questioned how Youngkin specifically would help Trump more than the other candidates, against President Joe Biden in November, McCarthy pointed out that current polling shows that Trump needs to either win in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, or Michigan to secure the presidential race.

The former lawmaker who after being ousted from the role of Speaker resigned from the House, argued that Youngkin was “popular” in Virginia and that he could help Trump carry the state. The state has not voted in favor of a GOP presidential candidate since 2004.

The governor has also been present during Trump’s recent rally in the state.
