While the mainstream media was obsessively focused on the gender war between Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders at Tuesday’s final Democratic primary debate, former Vice President Joe Biden got away with telling a handful of lies to the audience in Des Moines that served to make his candidacy look better and President Trump look worse. Naturally, the adoring liberal media spent little time correcting Biden on these whoppers, but for anyone interested, here’s a rundown on the three worst.
The Obama Administration Defeated ISIS
This was one of those lies that Biden knew he could get away with, because no one in the mainstream media was going to correct him. Not a chance, because to fact-check Biden on this point would be to give President Donald Trump credit, and that’s something the media’s fact checkers simply refuse to do. Nonetheless, Biden’s impunity to correction did not make his assertion any less dishonest.
“I was part of the coalition that put together 68 counties to deal with stateless terror as well as failed states. Not us alone, 68 other countries, that’s how we were able to defeat and end the caliphate of ISIS,” Biden said.
This is nonsense, of course. While Biden was ready to share the victory with 68 other countries, he was not ready to share it with the man who really deserves it – current President Donald Trump. It was only after Trump assumed office in 2017 that the U.S. and her allies made significant gains against ISIS. It was also under Trump’s command that the military caught up to and killed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in late 2019. Under no coherent view of the universe can Obama, much less Joe Biden, take credit for any of this.
The Iran Deal Was Working
This isn’t a lie that begins and ends with Joe Biden – it is the left’s basic mantra: That prior to President Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal, it was actually doing exactly what it set out to do.
“I was part of that deal to get the nuclear agreement with Iran, bringing together the rest of the world, including some of the folks who aren’t friendly to us — and it was working,” Biden said on Tuesday. “It was working, it was being held tightly. There was no movement on the part of the Iranian government to get close to a nuclear weapon.”
There is, perhaps, an argument that Iran was obeying the letter of the deal, if not the spirit. But then, that’s part of the problem. The letter of the deal simply wasn’t good enough, and it gave Tehran a path to the bomb immediately upon the agreement’s expiration. In the meantime, the rogue regime was free to build and test ballistic missiles, export terror throughout the Middle East, and stuff its coffers full of money thanks to the sanctions relief. The deal under Biden and Obama made us less safe, not more so.
Trump Violated the Law By Going “Into Iran”
In another effort to paint a picture of the Trump administration as a rogue force in the world, Biden said that the president’s strike on Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani was a violation of the congressional authorization of force from 2001.
“It does not give authority to go into Iran,” Biden said. “It gave authority to deal with these other issues.”
There is some debate even on the point that Biden was trying to make, but there is no debate as to whether Trump went “into Iran” to kill Soleimani. The Iranian terrorist was killed on the road to Baghdad, inside Iraq. If anyone was in violation of anyone else’s sovereign territory, it was Soleimani.
Democrats, including Biden, have never quite explained what the oh-so-innocent Soleimani was doing in Iraq if he wasn’t planning further aggression against U.S. troops.
