We’re not sure what, if anything, Joe Biden learned when watching Hillary Clinton go down in flames in the 2016 election, but he certainly must have missed the “basket of deplorables” episode. Which, given Hillary and the Democrats’ propensity to blame literally everyone and everything other than themselves for the loss to Donald Trump, might not be too surprising. Biden has likely forgotten that much of Clinton’s loss came as a result of Clinton herself, a historically terrible candidate who talked down to her own supporters and spoke of Trump’s as if they were the worst people on the face of the earth.
Unfortunately for Biden, he must have just heard the “Russia, Russia, Russia” refrain, because he just stepped into the same dung pile that Hillary did.
Speaking at a Human Rights Campaign dinner in Washington this weekend, the former vice president said anti-LGBT forces had found a friend in Donald Trump.
“Despite losing in the courts, and in the court of opinion, these forces of intolerance remain determined to undermine and roll back the progress you all have made,” he said. “This time they—not you—have an ally in the White House. This time they have an ally. They’re a small percentage of the American people—virulent people, some of them the dregs of society.”
Biden said it was up to the heroes in the Human Rights Campaign and on the left to fight the bigotry of the Trump administration and the president’s supporters.
“Those who try to excuse this kind of prejudice in the name of culture, I say, ‘Prejudice is prejudice, and humanity is humanity,’” he said. “It is a crime. Our work is not yet done by any stretch of the imagination. The stakes are much too high.”
We can only assume that with his references to “losing in the courts,” Biden was talking – at least in part – about the gay marriage debate. Which is kinda funny because, correct us if we’re wrong, but wasn’t Barack Obama part of the “culture” saying that marriage should be between a man and a woman for a long time? Hmm, was Obama a “virulent dreg of society” at that time? Or was he just someone with a different opinion about the constitution of marriage? Just checking.
Anyway, if Biden thinks he’s going to run in 2020 on a platform of “All Trump Supporters Are Evil Bigots,” we heartily welcome him to the race. Can you say FOUR MORE YEARS…
