Though no one who has any sense of history could possibly praise President Obama for allowing the humiliation of 10 U.S. sailors go unanswered, Iran is steadily proving that his remaining supporters have it all wrong. Obama got plenty of praise for his diplomacy following what could have turned out to be a major international incident, but some of that goodwill is fading as Tehran begins using photos of those sailors to taunt the U.S.
On Wednesday, the Islamic Republic released unseen photos of the captured Navy sailors, one of which shows a sailor crying. These new photos, of course, come after the initial media release, which showed the sailors on their knees before the Revolutionary Guard.
If that wasn’t enough, one of Iran’s top military commanders said this week that the U.S. no longer held any power over them. Celebrating the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution, Mohammad Reza Naqdi said, “It is impossible to compare Iran today to Iran under the Shah’s rule, since back then, Iran was subordinate to the American administration, while today, the United States subordinates to Iran’s dominance in the Middle East and it cannot act in the region without getting the approval of the Supreme Leader of Iran.”
Naqdi’s arrogance isn’t the problem, though it is astounding. The problem is that he’s right. America has been made a laughing stock by Iran in the months following the nuclear agreement, and they appear to be making a game out of how far they can push Obama before he finally pushes back. Of course, that’s not much of a game, seeing as how this president would rather resign from office than take decisive action on behalf of America’s best interests. It’s unclear if Obama even has the slightest idea what those interests actually are.
This situation is intolerable, and the embarrassment is the least of it. We have bent over backwards to drag Iran onto the world stage with us, and they are thumbing their noses back at every opportunity. That would be fine if this was just a war of words, but this is a country with designs on the destruction of Israel. This is a country where “Death to America” is a phrase chanted passionately by the Ayatollah. This is a country that actively funds terrorism and is in cahoots with the despicable Assad regime in Syria.
But worst of all, this is a country that is being allowed to pursue nuclear technology that could be used to develop weapons of mass destruction within a decade. It’s one thing for Obama to play the fool; it’s another for him to endanger the lives of millions of people with his reckless diplomacy.
