Are we already at that point in the Democratic primaries where candidates are beginning to cast nervous glances at the general electorate? We must be, because when Sen. Kamala Harris appeared on ABC’s “The View” on Friday, she didn’t seem like the cocksure defender of open borders that she and her fellow candidates sounded like on the debate stage last month. Maybe she’s perused some of those national polls that demonstrate just how out of step the Democratic Party is with the American people when it comes to illegal immigration.
Or maybe she just realized how stupid she sounded in the middle of a national television interview.
“You’re for decriminalizing border crossings — you’re one of the people who raised your hand at the debate. Do you agree with AOC that we should get rid of DHS (Department of Homeland Security) altogether?” asked co-host Meagan McCain.
“That is not correct,” Harris said, even though it most certainly is. “I am not in favor of decriminalizing, uh, or not having consequences for…we have to keep — let me just be very clear.”
Well, you certainly started out that way.
“We have to have a secure border, but I am in favor of saying that we’re not going to treat people who are undocumented and cross the border as criminals. That is correct,” Harris continued. “And what we’ve got to do is we cannot have any more policy like we have under this current president that is about inhumane conduct, that is about putting babies in cages and it’s about separating children from their parents.”
Mmm, now it’s “babies” in cages. How dreadful.
“And we have got to have policy that is about passing immigration reform with a pathway toward citizenship, shutting down these private prisons—”
McCain stopped her. “I do find it confusing – I believe if someone crosses over the border illegally, it is illegal, and you would decriminalize it.”
“I would not make it punishable by jail,” Harris clarified. “It should be a civil enforcement issue, but not a criminal enforcement issue. So there should be — you know, you gotta play by the rules, but we can’t treat people like criminals when — when they’re crossing the border.”
“I think just for conservatives it is a talking point that we think open borders is something the left wants, and I understand that we have a difference of opinion…” McCain said.
“But I believe in border security,” Harris said.
No, you don’t. You believe in border theater, which is exactly what the Democrats have been practicing for the last two years. That’s what has led us to our current crisis. The only crisis that Democrats see is that we have migrants in detention centers. If they were just allowed to go on their merry way, Democrats would be just fine with the status quo.
That’s why they can’t be allowed in power, no matter how much they “believe in border security.” Don’t make us laugh.
