(PatriotNewsDaily.com) – According to a recent Emerson College Polling survey, 40 percent of U.S. voters believe former President Donald Trump should serve jail time following his conviction in a hush-money case, although opinions vary significantly across political lines.

The poll, released on Thursday, revealed that among registered voters, 25 percent think Trump should merely pay a fine, 15 percent suggest probation, and 20 percent remain undecided.

Trump was convicted on May 30th on 34 counts of falsifying business records in New York, related to payments made to his former lawyer Michael Cohen. These payments were reimbursements for $130,000 given to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to suppress information about her alleged affair with Trump. This conviction marks him as the first former U.S. president to be found guilty of a felony.

His sentencing is set for July 11th. However, given the nature of the charges and his status as a first-time offender, actual jail time could be unprecedented in New York.

The survey indicates a partisan split in perceptions of Trump’s appropriate punishment: 67 percent of Democrats believe he should be incarcerated, whereas 46 percent of Republicans favor a fine. Among Independents, opinions are more divided; 42 percent support imprisonment, 22 percent a fine, and 14 percent probation.

Despite his felony conviction, Trump’s overall support appears stable according to the poll. His backing remains at 46 percent, unchanged from April, though his lead over President Biden has slightly narrowed from three points to one in the latest survey.

Regarding the impact of Trump’s convictions on voter behavior, 40 percent stated that it does not influence their voting intentions this November. Conversely, one-third said the conviction makes them less likely to support him, while 27 percent reported it makes them more likely to back him.
