Georgia Republicans: Disney Too Good for Our State, But Not For China

In fully-justified remarks this week, Republicans from Georgia released statements bashing Disney for their boycott of the state – a move that now seems painfully hypocritical given that the entertainment company filmed their new “Mulan” remarks in China. Last year, Disney said they would no longer shoot movies in Georgia due to a law that would ban abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected. But Disney’s supposed commitment to human rights apparently didn’t extend to China, where Muslims are still being rounded up and forced into concentration camps.

In 2019, Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke to Reuters about the company’s decision to sever ties with Georgia.

“I don’t see how it’s practical for us to continue to shoot there,” he said.

But as the Hollywood Reporter noted this week, Disney didn’t hesitate to bring their “Mulan” production to China.

“Not only did Disney shoot in the region, but the studio appears to have offered its gratitude to Chinese government agencies involved in alleged abuses,” they reported. “Mulan‘s credit sequence also extends a thank you to the ‘publicity department of CPC Xinjiang Uighur Autonomy Region Committee,’ the Chinese Communist Party agency responsible for producing and managing state propaganda efforts in the region.”

In a statement this week, Rep. Jody Hice (R-GA) blasted Disney for the blatant hypocrisy.

“Yet another once-great American corporation – the Walt Disney Company – has decided to stand in-league with the evil communist regime in China rather than support and defend American values of equality and respect for all peoples, creeds and religions,” said Hice. “Disney happily jumped into the debate in the State of Georgia to oppose the ‘Heartbeat’ bill, which saves the lives of thousands of unborn babies from abortion – but refuses to condemn Communist China’s systematic persecution of religious minorities by the millions.”

Hice continued: “This grossly hypocritical position and the recent controversy surrounding the movie ‘Mulan’ demonstrates the massive influence of China in Hollywood. Many of us in Congress have been speaking out against China’s blatant disregard for religious liberty for years. But if the American private sector continues to support and collaborate with the communist government, then the fight to stop China’s human rights abuses becomes that much harder.”

But hey, in China abortion is not just okay, it’s actively encouraged by the Chinese Communist Party. So in the twisted minds of the Hollywood left, that makes them better than the Christian hicks down in Georgia.
