At her press conference last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi mounted her high horse to lament the divide between the have’s and have-not’s. While this is fairly standard rhetoric for any Democrat in the spotlight, Pelosi is seen as a particularly terrible spokesperson for the cause, as was made clear by the social media backlash her remarks received. Americans aren’t keen on being lectured on their privilege under the best of circumstances (well, most aren’t, anyway), but the pill is especially bitter coming from a woman as rich and entitled as Pelosi herself.
“This vaccine – this pandemic is horrible,” Pelosi said. “I mean, in every way, the lives and livelihoods of the American people are affected by it in a massive way. However, it has also pulled back the curtain to reveal further disparities in our economy and in our society. They have become – come into sharper focus because of the pandemic.
“Clearly,” she continued, “the disparities in income and equity in our country are vast. We’ve known that. They’ve only gotten worse, and the pandemic, again, puts it in sharper focus. And that’s why I’m proud to announce the creation of a new bipartisan Select Committee on Economic Disparity and Fairness in Growth, which will be a central force for the Congress to combat the crisis of income and wealth disparity in America.”
But some critics were less than impressed with a lesson in economic unfairness coming from a woman worth an estimated $114 million.
“Pelosi owns a $24,000 fridge,” noted Twitter user Logan Hall.
“The ice cream she has in her fridge costs more than the salary you make in a month.,” observed the conservative group Reagan Battalion.
Another Twitter user drew attention to the hypocrisy of elected Democrats: “Oddly even after decades in office and millions in personal wealth, they never volunteer to reduce or donate their Congressional salary.”
That is especially strange when it comes to someone like Pelosi, who certainly didn’t amass her fortune by squirreling away her government wages.
We certainly don’t begrudge anyone – Pelosi included – of making the most of the American dream. But when these millionaires come out to lecture hardworking taxpayers about how unfair it is that some have it all and some have nothing…it comes off as disingenuous. At best. What is Pelosi doing PERSONALLY to even the playing field between herself and those living in San Francisco slums?
If these Democrat elitists really want to spread the wealth, they ought to at least start with their own.
