(PatriotNewsDaily.com) – This week in Oregon the district attorney’s race resulted in the defeat of a progressive prosecutor which highlights that the Democrats are going to face a challenging road on issues of public safety and crime ahead of the 2024 election.

Prosecutor Mike Schmidt was removed from his position following a primary challenge by another Democrat who had claimed that he was tougher on crime. The challenger managed to win the race by around eight posts.

Schmidt, who had first campaigned on a progressive platform ahead of the 2020 murder of George Floyd, has been removed from his position amidst the increase in crime in Oregon, which is a deep-blue state. The state has the third-highest homelessness rate in the United States and tensions have increased due to the fentanyl crisis paired with the general efforts to decriminalize drugs.

His latest loss has come as the GOP has been slamming Democrats on crime ahead of November’s election. This defeat in the primary race further showcased that even in deep-blue states crime is a key issue that has resonated with the majority of people.

Jake Weigler, a Democratic analyst based in Portland, argued that the conversation needed to include mentions of the justice system’s systemic inequalities and racism He added that if the public was not confident that they were capable of enforcing the law, then they would not be patient with the move to reform the justice system.

Schmidt’s defeat became the latest example that Democratic voters are moving away from the progressive policies that had gained support four years ago, following the death of Floyd, which had resulted in many people calling for the police to be defunded.
