(PatriotNewsDaily.com) – On Thursday, Meta, the parent company of both Instagram and Facebook, stated that a person in China had created thousands of fake accounts that were meant to spread polarizing political views to Americans. The platform stated that this was an attempt at dividing the country ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

The network of around 4,800 fake accounts was trying to build up an audience in the U.S. before the company identified the fake accounts and eliminated them. The accounts included fake names, photos, and locations that were trying to make it seem like the accounts belonged to everyday Americans who were pushing their political views on different issues.

The accounts were not being used to spread fake content but instead, they were resharing multiple posts from X, formerly known as Twitter, that had been created by media outlets and politicians. The accounts were pushing content from conservative and liberal sources, indicating that the accounts were not made to push either one ideology forward. Instead, the role of the accounts was to create more partisan division and polarize the nation further.

The network of fake accounts is an indication of how America’s foreign adversaries were using U.S.-based tech to create division in the country, as well as the threat of online disinformation ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Next year there will also be elections in several other countries including Taiwan, Ukraine, Pakistan, India, Mexico, and the United States.

Meta Platforms Inc. noted that they could not definitively link the network to the Chinese government but that they had determined that the network originated from China.
