(PatriotNewsDaily.com) – Next week, three drag performers are set to lobby House lawmakers in an attempt to push for more protection for the LGBTQ community as they are fighting against an increase in threats and hate against them.
Joey Jay, Brigitte Bandit, and Jiggly Caliente all met on Capitol Hill with lawmakers from both sides of the aisle on Tuesday. They dubbed the event “Drag Lobby Day,” which is organized by the progressive advocacy group MoveOn Political Action.
The group’s campaign director Nakia Stephens noted that the MAGA GOP has attacked the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ+ people for too long and that their “lives are on the line.” Stephens added that they would not be “silenced.”
The lobbying efforts are predominantly focused on the Equality Act, which they aim to expand to include federal nondiscrimination protections. As part of these efforts, gender identity and sexual orientation would be considered protected classes. They are also pushing for the Transgender Bill of Rights, a landmark resolution that would provide trans and nonbinary Americans with further protection, to be passed.
Last year, House Democrats reintroduced the two measures; however, there has not been any progress on the two bills since then.
The Congressional Equality Caucus Chair Mark Pocan (D-WI) stated in February that this Congress was “purely a building public support session” for the Equality Act and that the intention to push forward these bills depends entirely on the Democrats being able to win back the lower chamber in November.
