After House Democrats used their last trip to visit Customs and Border Protection facilities to propagandize and disrupt proceedings at the migrant detention centers, the Department of Homeland Security decided this week that they would not be allowed to do so again. Fox News reported on Thursday that, despite Rep. Elijah Cummings’ desire to send staffers to CBP centers for further “inspections,” DHS officials revoked access for the planned visit, accusing Democrat staffers of interfering with law enforcement operations.
From Fox News:
Sources told Fox News that DHS has revoked access to CBP facilities for the upcoming visit, citing staff behavior that “interfered” with law enforcement operations — including refusing to leave one site after their scheduled window, skipping some tours and being “rude” to officers. A DHS official said that ICE visits will still be allowed this week, but with a two-hour time limit. One of those visits took place on Tuesday.
“Due to the operational burden placed on the field by their refusal to comply with instruction during last week’s STAFFDEL [staff delegation visit], CBP pulled the trip in which more site visits were to take place at CBP and ICE facilities this week,” a senior DHS official told Fox News in an email Wednesday. “DHS communicated to the committee that due to their conduct, CBP could not support visits from the committee this week.”
A Democratic source suggested the visit is being nixed due to concerns about what staff were learning from detainees about conditions on the ground.
Well, yeah. They WOULD say that.
In truth, though, we have no trouble believing the substantive reasoning given by the Department of Homeland Security, only because this decision gives the Democrats such an easy talking point. Oh, they don’t want us to peer behind the curtain and show the American people the HORRORS of what’s going on inside! Beware, good citizens! Beware of what this Nazi regime is doing without your consent!
By the same token, we find it imminently believable that Democratic House staffers couldn’t muster up the professionalism to behave themselves.
In a letter to Cummings, DHS Assistant Secretary of Legislative Affairs Christine Ciccone told the lawmaker exactly why his aides wouldn’t be allowed back.
“During discussions between Department and Committee staff, however, the Committee staff repeatedly stated that they do not intend to abide by DHS guidelines,” Ciccone wrote. “In light of this, we are unable to accommodate your staff’s visit unless we receive a firm commitment that the Committee and its staff will comply fully with all existing guidelines and policies.”
If they can’t even meet this low standard, then the true motives behind the visit are automatically exposed.
